The Yolks are Blue

Zachary Riley

security cameras
examine
all the customers
enter their PIN numbers
using cards from
banks that hold
their money
to see screens read
transaction approved

customers walk out
through security scanners
past security guards
towards parked cars
unlocked and started
with a button or a key

drivers fasten seatbelts
follow road signs
open gates
to their driveways
storing cars in
automatic door garages

keys go in locks
opening front doors
and number codes
turn off house alarms

some put eggs in the fridge
and the carton protects
the eggs and the shells
protect the yolks

others turn on computers
with passwords
and read news websites:
everything is safe
everyone is safe
even the eggs
but don’t be alarmed
if the yolks are blue
